Ingredients
  

The Foundation:

  • 1 loaf brioche bread about 1 pound
  • 6 large eggs
  • 2 cups half-and-half
  • 1 cup whole milk

The Flavoring Agents:

  • 2 tbsp vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp orange liqueur optional

The Caramelized Topping:

  • 3/4 cup brown sugar packed
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 2 tbsp maple syrup
  • 1/4 tsp cinnamon optional

Instructions
 

Prepare the Caramel Base:

  • Heat brown sugar, butter, and maple syrup in a saucepan over medium heat, stirring until smooth.
  • Pour mixture evenly into a 9x13-inch baking dish and let it cool.

Arrange the Bread:

  • Slice brioche into 1-inch thick pieces and arrange in the baking dish, slightly overlapping.

Make the Custard:

  • Whisk eggs, half-and-half, milk, vanilla, sugar, salt, and orange liqueur until smooth.
  • Pour over the bread and press gently to absorb.
  • Cover and refrigerate overnight.

Bake the French Toast:

  • Preheat oven to 350°F.
  • Remove from fridge and let sit for 30 minutes.
  • Cover with foil and bake for 30 minutes.
  • Uncover and bake another 15-20 minutes until golden and set.
  • Let cool for 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • Use day-old brioche for better absorption.
  • For a crunchier top, sprinkle extra sugar before baking.
  • Serve with fresh berries, powdered sugar, or a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
  • Try flavor variations like chocolate-orange, pecan praline, or pumpkin spice.
