Equipment

  • Large shallow bowl

Ingredients

Bread and Base Ingredients

  • 6 thick slices of day-old brioche or challah
  • 3 large eggs
  • 2/3 cup whole milk
  • 2 tablespoons heavy cream

Flavor Enhancers

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • Pinch of salt
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar

Optional Add-Ins and Toppings

  • Unsalted butter for cooking
  • Maple syrup
  • Powdered sugar
  • Fresh berries
  • Whipped cream

Instructions

  • Prepare the Batter: In a large, shallow bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, and sugar. Let the mixture sit for 2-3 minutes to allow the spices to bloom.
  • Prepare the Bread: Use day-old bread for best results. Cut into thick slices (3/4 to 1 inch). If using fresh bread, leave it out for 30 minutes to dry slightly.
  • Soak and Cook: Dip each slice into the egg mixture for 20-30 seconds per side. Ensure the bread is well-coated but not falling apart. Heat a skillet over medium heat and melt a pat of butter. Cook the bread slices for 3-4 minutes on each side until golden brown.
  • Serve and Garnish: Transfer to a warm plate. Top with powdered sugar, maple syrup, fresh berries, or whipped cream.

Notes

  • Gluten-Free: Use gluten-free bread.
  • Dairy-Free: Substitute milk with almond or oat milk.
  • Vegan: Use egg replacer or mashed banana.
  • Low-Carb: Opt for almond flour bread or cloud bread.
  • To keep French toast warm, place cooked slices in a 200°F (93°C) oven until ready to serve.
